When living a green and clean lifestyle, sugar is generally best avoided. But when it comes to exfoliating, raw cane sugar is the first natural product I reach for. Sugar’s small particles make an excellent exfoliant, and also have benefits over salt scrubs. Small sugar granules are generally gentler than salt, which can cause microscopic tears in the skin. And then there is sugar’s natural humectant properties, meaning sugar scrubs are very hydrating and help hold moisture in the skin. Not only that, sugar is also a natural source of glycolic acid and alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) which penetrate the skin and break down the “glue” that bonds skin cells, encouraging cell turnover and generating fresher, younger-looking skin.
Spring is the perfect time of year to start adding exfoliation into your routine. After the cold Winter air has dried your skin, it’s important to exfoliate dead surface skin cells and reveal the glowing, healthy-looking skin underneath.
This recipe uses sugar and oil as a basic exfoliator suitable for all skin types. Feel free to stick to this very basic two ingredient recipe! There is never an excuse not to exfoliate! However if you want an extra boost to your exfoliator, add in the following;
sensitive skin: add oats ground in a blender or pestle and mortar oily / acne prone skin: matcha green tea dry / ageing skin: good quality ground coffee normal / combination skin: any of the above, or try out a mixture of two or three!
You can also add essential oils for additional benefits to your skin and to add a gorgeous scent to your product. The guide below will hep you choose the best essential oils for your skin;
oily skin: tea tree, bergamot, lavender dry skin: rose, geranium, grapefruit sensitive skin: lavender, geranium, chamomile normal skin: any of the above
Ingredients • raw cane sugar (if your skin is sensitive, go for a very fine brown sugar. If your skin is more robust or very dry, add in fine white cane sugar). • sweet almond oil (you could also use a good quality olive oil, avocado oil or sesame oil. All of which are easily found in • your local health food or organic supermarket ) • your choice of additional exfoliators from the list above (optional) •A few drops of essential oil (choose best oil for your skin type from the list above)
Directions Step one: Add dry exfoliants to a bowl
Step two: Add base oil gradually to make a thick paste. You want this is be thick enough to not slip straight off the face, but thin enough to move across the skin.
Step three: Add 3-5 drops of essential oil. Feel free to keep it simple with one essential oil, or blend two or even three together (no more than three!) to create the perfect blend for your skin. Keep smelling and add a few more drops if you like a stronger scent, but go slowly. Choose scents that please you and that match your skin type.
